Pucker up! Today is Kissing day. Any day is good for kissing really, As a French woman, I highly advocate kissing.

Here are some thoughts I shared with a Newsweek reporter on the subject.

What are the main kissing techniques? How many are there and what are they?

I’m tempted to say that there are as many kissing techniques as there are people, because everyone kisses in their own way. And just like sex, which sometimes follows kissing, what makes it good is not the doing of it, but the being of it. It’s not what the body parts are doing, it’s how you show up for the kiss.

That being said, there are several ways to kiss:

*The kiss you blow, with or without your hand and hopefully with some exuberance, to your lover, your child as they leave on the schoolbus or family members at the airport.

*That first kiss, which, for better or worse, you will never forget, and which will never come back. Whether it’s the result of much anticipation or catches you off guard.

*The peck on the cheek that leaves you wanting more, or is an obligation kiss to an aged aunt. The peck peck that ‘accidentally’ lands very close to the other person’s mouth, the promise of desire.

*Speaking of desire, there’s the slam-them-up-against-the-wall and kiss them deep kiss.

*When you start to lose control, there’s the nibbling or biting kiss, that leaves marks on your lover’s lips, that they can reminisce about when they look in the mirror.

*Variations on tongue use, whether probing, twirling, sucking I believe are called French kissing.

*I grew up in France where greeting someone usually involves 2-4 alternating cheek kisses. Nothing sexy, just “hello”.

*Gentle, repetitive, rapid sequenced affectionate kisses I give my son when we cuddle in the morning.

Those pretty much covers it.

What aspects, in your opinion, make the perfect kiss?

The perfect kiss requires, presence, breath and chemistry.

A poly friend of mine told me once that one of his lovers said he was a wonderful kisser, while his other lover complained that he wasn’t a good kisser. He kissed them both the same way. You can be a great kisser for one person and not for another. Great kissing takes two.
